PLNU Hosts 10th Annual Writer's Symposium by the Sea If you can tear yourself away from the beautiful surroundings at Point Loma Nazarene University, an impressive lineup of authors is scheduled for the 10th Annual "Writer's Symposium by the Sea," February 23 through 26.
Ticket prices range from $5 to $15 for each speaker, or $40 to attend all events. Programs are open to the public. The tentative schedule includes the following participants.
Wednesday, Feb. 23, 7:00 p.m. Crill Hall An Evening with Jim Wallis Jim Wallis is a wñriter and leader for social change. He founded Sojourners, Christians for Justice and Peace in Washington D.C. more than 30 years ago, and is editor of Sojourners magazine, which covers faith, politics and culture. Wallis's columns appear in the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and other major newspapers. He was widely quoted in major news media during this past presidential election as an expert on justice, poverty and faith issues. Wallis's books include Faith Works: How Faith-based Organizations are Changing Lives, Neighborhoods and America (2000), and The Soul of Politics: Beyond 'Religious Right' and Secular Left' (1994).
Thursday, Feb. 24, 7:00 p.m. Crill Hall An Evening with Peter Matthiessen Peter Matthiessen is one of the founding editors of The Paris Review, along with George Plimpton and Donald Hall (both of whom have appeared at the PLNU Writer's Symposium). He has written nearly 30 books, which include novels, collections of short stories, and nonfiction. Much of his writing explores natural environments and human cultures threatened by encroaching development and technology. His highly acclaimed book, The Snow Leopard, won the National Book Award.
Friday, Feb. 25, 9:00 a.m. Crill Hall "Covering Culture" with Deborah Seibel Deborah Seibel covers popular culture for TV Guide, Broadcasting and Cable Magazine, the New York Post, and has also written for television programs such as "Mysterious Ways," "Promised Land" and "Sisters." In the 1990s she covered the media for the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times. She has won Emmy Awards for her television journalism in Chicago, Denver and Phoenix, and was awarded the William Benton Fellowship in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Chicago.
Friday, Feb. 25, 10:15 a.m., Crill Hall "Storytelling Every Which Way" with Doug TenNapel Short films, feature films, television, animation, claymation, comics, graphic novels, you name it: there is no genre where Doug TenNapel cannot go. His television work includes animation for the Fox Saturday morning cartoon "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes," along with his new cartoon series coming out on Nickelodeon in the spring of 2005 called "Catscratch." TenNapel has several graphic novels out, including Creature Tech, which is being made into a Hollywood movie, and Tommysaurus Rex. His video game, "Earthworm Jim," was made into a television show. He was the creative producer on the ABC prime time murder mystery, "Push, Nevada." He is a regular speaker at ComiCon in San Diego.
Saturday, Feb. 26, 7:00 p.m. Crill Hall An Evening With Bill Moyers Bill Moyers is one of the most important people in broadcast journalism history. His "Bill Moyers Reports" program and "NOW with Bill Moyers" on Public Television have been some of the most highly regarded broadcasts because of their thoroughness, their creativity, their accuracy, and their stunning craft of storytelling. Moyers has won more than 30 Emmys, two Gold Baton Awards, and a Peabody Award for Lifetime Achievement for his three decades in he media. Before entering broadcasting, Moyers was deputy director of the Peace Corps, and was the press secretary to President Lyndon Johnson. He left the White House to be publisher of Newsday newspaper.
