Rich Tradition of Swingers Continues With Reiman Tournament March 4th By J.W. August, Golf Chairman On March 4th, as Press Club members and their guests tee it up at Singing Hills, they are continuing a tradition stretching back several decades. In 1974, Andy Mace organized the first golf outing at what was called the Stardust Golf Club in Mission Valley. That's where Riverwalk is now. Back then, the Stardust was a happening place. It wasn't unusual to see businessmen, politicians, big time attorneys or judges hanging out and enjoying each other's company as well as drinks, food or maybe a little back room poker. And of course, there was golf. From the Stardust, the Press Club tournaments moved around the county each year, with Andy's favorites being Cottonwood and Singing Hills. My favorite memory was winning a putter for closest to the pin at Singing Hills. (and four putting!) In the mid-90s..I took over the tournament, trying to carry on the tradition that Andy started twenty years earlier. The philosophy hasn't changed. The goal is to provide a great outing at the lowest possible price for as many people who want to play. On my shift, we've played in Baja, the Auld in Chula Vista, Mt. Woodson in Ramona, Carmel Mountain, Twin Oaks in San Marcos, Cottonwood and Singing Hills. Seven years ago, we named the tournament after an avid golfer and press club board member the late Jim Reiman. He loved the game so much Jim had his ashes spread in a canyon on a local course. This year, SignOnSanDiego has generously agreed to sponsor the tournament. Which means cool prizes and fun contests on the Singing Hills layout. You can win golf equipment, dinners out, sports memorabilia, all kinds of neat stuff.. Asked anyone who has played, whether you are a great golfer or a duffer like myself, it's a fun outing. To reserve your foursome for this year, contact the Press Club office at 619 2314340, or e mail to sdpressclub@cox.net. The $55 fee includes practice balls, golf cart, a round of golf and a chance to win some goodies. First tee off time is 12:07. I am told the course is in great shape. See you Friday, the 4th!!
