President's Column

By Robert Griswold

We seemed to have skipped winter for the most part and it won't be long until spring is in the air. So it must be time for another excellent San Diego Press Club Food and Wine Committee social event.

Ron and his dedicated food and wine enthusiasts have planned the perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon in early March. Be sure to check out the Jsix event and sign up now as it will be a sellout!

Maybe we can encourage Ron to plan our next event in Paris. My wife and I have graciously volunteered to make the big sacrifice and do some hands on research. We will be heading there at the end of this month for a few days to celebrate Carol's birthday (not a milestone at least not this year). Extravagant, you say? Not at all, if you know how to find bargains in airfares. We booked roundtrip flights during the holidays for only $398 each (plus taxes, etc.) for the two of us. Also, the hotel rates are lower before April 1st so the whole trip will be less than $3,000 for six days.

Here is a hint - Air Tahiti Nui flies daily from Paris to LAX and then on to Tahiti. They practically give away the seats on the LAX - Paris leg so you can really find some deals in the off-season. And their service in coach is top shelf. Also, if you are in to cruising like we are there are some fantastic deals on Mexico cruises from right here in San Diego.

I have another tip that will save your friends money, too. This is also the time of year when you should encourage your peers to join the Press Club. Club Manager Terry Williams tells me that we will give new members a few extra bonus months if they join today, so your first annual renewal will not be until June of 2007. What a deal!

Now if anyone hears about any great deals for Australia or New Zealand . . . . . let me know. We are very willing to personally research future Press Club social event locations in the southern hemisphere!
