President's Column

It is June and the year is nearly half over! I know that this is not one of my more scholarly Presidential comments and it is an overused clichÈ to comment about how quickly the year has gone . . . but it is true.

Maybe it has something to do with the fast pace of issues at the local, state, national and international level.

For the active media members of the San Diego Press Club we are very blessed with plenty of stories and material, as there never seems to be a dull moment. Every time I read, view or hear the news I am reminded of the old adage: ìMay you live in interesting timesî (Often thought to be a Chinese proverb, but my research indicates it actually was first stated in a short story by Duncan Munro in 1950).

Have we ever seen more chaos, corruption and turmoil at all levels of government? Maybe that is why the San Diego Press Club events are really hitting the spot this year!

Each month I enjoy giving you more examples of upcoming Press Club events that you can't miss. But this month I have to ask you to bear with me as I must take a moment to look back and thank all of those that made the ìSidewaysî Temecula Valley winery tour and the Jerry Coleman event so memorable!

First, hearty congratulations to Ron James and Terry Williams for a fantastic getaway weekend with good food, great friends, and even a little taste or two of some very fine wine! Of course, a trip like this didn't just happen - Ron had some expert help from wife Mary along with another couple who know a thing or two about wine ñ J.W. August and Lori Weisberg! Thanks guys for scouting out all of the best locations for us! I don't think it would exactly qualify as a ìdry runî! Ron tells me that there will be a sequel!

The feedback on the Jerry Coleman event was equally positive due to the hard work of our fantastic committee ñ Reid Carroll, Dennis Morgigno, Jan Percival, Frank Saldana and Terry Williams ñ what a team! Master of Ceremonies Mark Grant orchestrated a fun evening with taped tributes from Tony Gwynn and Trevor Hoffman followed by witty and heart-felt comments from Robert Horsman, Tim Flannery, Randy Jones and Bruce Bochy. The evening was possible thank to our generous sponsors - Cox Communication, Channel 4 Padres, San Diego National Bank, and the San Diego Padres. Jerry and Maggie were truly delighted and honored.

But I have to admit that one of my favorite comments that evening was one of our dear members who shared with me that they read (and enjoy!) my President's message (No, it wasn't my Mom!).
