J-Awards Dress Code By Chuck Fox, Chair The entries are submitted. A record number of them, in fact: 1,135 is the official count. The entries are in the hot little hands of the judges. The committee has plans well under way for the October 26 J-Awards Dinner at Chuey's. It's nervous time for journalists all over San Diego County. In fact, for those of you planning to attend (and who isn't?) the only thing left to do is pick out your outfit. Pick out an outfit? Yes, there is a very strict dress code this year. The fashion subcommittee, headed up by the sartorial diva Gayle Lynn Falkenthal, has decreed that Journalist Chic is the fashion of the night. What the heck is Journalist Chic? According to Diva Falkenthal, it is "pretty much whatever you want it to be!" The mind boggles at what the working press, left to their own devices, might show up wearing. For those of you who have not been paying attention (and you know who you are) this years' J-Awards Dinner is going to be different... in fact it will be FUN! Now I apologize to those who take these things seriously, but we are proceeding with the Irish philosophy that things may be critical, but they are hardly serious! The theme is a return to the glory days of journalism, the late 40s. Newspapers were king, radio was still growing and TV was just bursting onto the scene. There will be a distinct "Latin Quarter" feeling to Chuey's and there will be plenty of time to mingle and carry on conversations. Chuey's is at the corner of Main and Caesar Chavez. The trolley has a stop about 50 yards from the front door so plan to park at one of the trolley stations and ride in comfort. Invitations will be in the mail soon, so make plans to attend the festivities and give and/or receive some much-deserved recognition to the best in our industry. Posted Sept. 2006 |
