Knowledge of: Principles in public relations, marketing, advertising, graphics design, standards, and printing services for the techniques of preparing, producing and disseminating information, using all major communications media; journalistic styles of writing and editing; principles and techniques of establishing and maintaining good internal and external relations; management of office operations; special events coordination; desktop publishing, donor software, photography, interviewing, speech writing, editing, proofreading and multi-media presentation development including PowerPoint presentation skills; and, oral and strong written communication skills.
A typical way for applicants to meet the qualifications would be equivalent to the following: Bachelor's Degree with a major in Communications or related degree and two years of increasingly responsible public relations or fund development experience.        
   

Features writer The North County Times in North San Diego County, with a circulation of 88,648 weekdays and 93,151 on Sundays as of Sept. 30, 2005, has an opening for a features writer (biz, etc.). Duties include writing locally themed stories about interesting and topical people and trends for the Sunday Life section each week, as well as local stories for our Food, Faith & Values, Home, Books and Travel sections. Features reporters also see their stories go A-1 and regularly pitch in with team projects involving the whole newsroom. Several years' reporting experience required, and an ability to bring stories to life with storytelling skills. Be able to juggle several story assignments at once, to think creatively and to see the big picture. SPORTS EDITOR ---- The North County Times seeks a top-flight journalist to lead a high quality staff in the gorgeous California sunshine at its Escondido offices. The successful candidate will be expected to articulate a vision of excellence for a sports news team that covers 27 high schools, three local colleges, San Diego State University, the MLB's Padres, the NFL's Chargers, a handful of minor league sports teams, plus an array of regular events with a strong emphasis on auto racing, golf, running and beach sports. We expect this editor to have good people skills and to be a coach and mentor to both young journalists and seasoned pros. The job requires strength as both an assigning editor and knowledge of good copy editing and page design techniques. Experience as a beat writer covering a pro or college team is desirable, but not required. Our next sports editor must also recognize the importance of a strong Web presence and be able to work closely with the on-line team.

Reporters - City Hall / Schools: Candidates should have at least one year of daily reporting experience and have a firm grasp of AP style. You also should be organized and prolific, detail-oriented, a self-starter, able to recognize and write on developing trends and issues, have the ability to develop good sources and to juggle several assignments at once, and be able to meet deadlines.

Business Writer:  The North County Times is in the market for a high-end business writer with a good understanding of economics, the ability to translate a balance sheet into something readers care about, and a desire to see A1 bylines on a regular basis. Hot topics in our communities include defense contracting, a still-booming housing market, energy issues, technology and tourism.

Copy Editors / Page Designers:  Top-flight wordsmiths with an eye for design and an interest/knowledge of working on Web site posting and editing wanted for night and weekend shifts. Applicants need to be capable of producing pages in Quark for our nine print editions as well as processing and posting materials for our Web editions. Successful candidates will demonstrate above average or superior skills with all aspects of copy editing.
